Academics

All grades follow the curriculum guidelines set out by the Ministry of Education. We are committed to excellence in all areas of learning and are constantly re-evaluating our academic programs to better address the changing needs of the school and society.

Integrated Curriculum
We strive to provide our students with the opportunity to develop the skills and attitudes necessary for independent learning and to develop the skills, concepts and knowledge associated with the four strands of the common curriculum (Humanities, Sciences, Practical and Fine arts.)

An integrated curriculum incorporates real life situations in learning and helps make the development of the necessary attitudes, skills and knowledge a more natural process

A strong language program provides a solid base for all academic skills. Language skills and processes that are developed from grade to grade are central to success in all curriculum areas. We are committed to providing students with instruction and experience to help them develop into competent readers and writers.

Our growing school library and classroom libraries enrich our language programs and develop functional literacy. Parents are encourages to use their local libraries with their children and to model reading at home as a worthwhile leisure activity.

Students and teachers throughout the school spend time each day reading silently. Teachers also read aloud to students on a daily basis

French
Students are offered instruction in French throughout the school. A variety of techniques such as plays, songs, games and puppetry are employed to ensure that learning is enjoyable. The focus of the program in the intermediate grades is on building a strong working vocabulary and oral expression of the language to ensure success in High School programs.

Learning Resource Center
A learning resource teacher is available to assist classroom teachers in the diagnosis of children with learning needs and challenges and in the planning of special programs to meet individual needs. Skilled parent and parish volunteers working under the direction of the learning assistance teacher assist individual and groups of students in their learning

Music
Music is an integral part of the program offered at Saint Anthony's. Each teacher works to incorporate appreciation of the musical arts in daily planning. All students are given the opportunity to listen to classical and contemporary music and are encouraged to participate in the  learning of songs in the classroom. Recorder is taught in the intermediate grades and the school choir sings for school events and for parish and school masses on a monthly basis. the school also produces a musical each year to provide all students with an opportunity to engage in the performing arts.

Computers
Computers will play an ever-increasing part in the education of students at Saint Anthony of Padua school. There are computer stations in each classroom and the students have the opportunity daily to develop their keyboarding, word processing and publishing skills as part of Language Arts, Science, Socials and Religion study units. A computer center in the library provides access to multi media programs for research purposes.

Sports

Sports in our school should be enjoyable, purposeful and supportive and their existence ought to complement the Mission and Philosophy of our Catholic Schools. Sports are a part of the value education that we provide and as such, provide a learning experience for each student. There must be an aspect of teaching in sport if real learning is to take place and there must also be an aspect of challenge. Each student involved in sport must recognize the responsibility of commitment to challenge; their desire to continue until we reach our goals. Because sports are so much a part of our value education, there must be an aspect of sportsmanship (to win and lose graciously) and fair play attached to every event. Our students should be able to participate in a well-organized and competently administered program of instruction and play.

Saint Anthony's School participates in intra mural sports and in CISVA sponsored events such as track and field, cross country and soccer. All students are encouraged to participate in training for these events. Teacher coaches make decisions as to team membership for competition. Team members are selected on a basis of skill, attitude and participation.
